Attendance
The school’s attendance percentage is generally at the 96% level, a reflection we think of the fact that Gillshill children actually want to be at school.
In the event of a pupil’s absence from school, parents are requested to telephone the school prior to the start of school, or at least by 9.30 am, in order to provide a reason for the absence.
In line with our policy of safeguarding children, the school office will ring you after that time if you have not been able to contact us.
Why is attendance important?
Pupils who are often absent from school are more likely to underperform and leave school with fewer qualifications. They are more likely to be unemployed, to experience social isolation, to suffer mental illness and to become homeless. Poor attendance is also associated with vulnerability, exploitation and crime.
What we do.
We may call you to ask to meet regarding your child's attendance. This is so that we can work together to help raise attendance at school; we find a joint approach much more successful. We will listen to you and work together to plan for the future.
In view of the requirements National Curriculum timetable and National Curriculum testing procedures and time-tables, parents are asked not to arrange holidays during term-time as this can affect a child’s progress significantly.
